Should circumcision be by choice for boys?

Jewish and Muslim groups protested on Wednesday (27th/June/2012) after a German court banned the circumcision of young boys for religious reasons in the first ruling of its kind in the country. The court in the western city of Cologne handed down the decision on Tuesday in the case of a doctor prosecuted for circumcising a four-year-old Muslim boy who had to be treated two days later for post-operative bleeding.

It ruled involuntary religious circumcision should be made illegal because it could inflict serious bodily harm on people who had not consented to it. However the ruling, which applies only to the Cologne area, said boys who consciously decided to be circumcised could have the operation. No age restriction was given, or any more specific details.

Male circumcision (and in some cultures female) is a common religious and traditional rite in most African countries. However in recent times, some have described circumcision as 'grevious bodily harm' especially since the subjects have no say in the decision.

Should the need to be circumcised be a decision left for boys to take when they are of age and not for parents to make on their behalf?

Cake stunt causes massive race row in Sweden...

Swedish culture minister triggers race row after cutting cake in the shape of a naked, black, native African woman. Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth had appeared at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm when she was invited to cut the cake which was designed like a naked African woman. The Swedish minister cut pieces from the black cake, which had blood-red sponge and was designed to highlight the issue of female genital mutilation. However, the bizarre stunt backfires horribly.

Paul Mcartney with Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. This picture was taken in 1973 in Lagos, Nigeria. Paul Mcartney in the company of his wife Linda travelled to Nigeria to record a new album. Fela Kuti met him at EMI studios in Lagos and had apparently accused Paul of visiting Nigeria to steal black music. Paul's recordings were then played back to Fela after which he (Fela) calmed down. Ghana to recognize cohabitation as marriage.

Men who have failed to formalize their relationships with their companions could soon see their properties shared with such women even if they failed to perform the necessary marriage rites.

Currently, two new bills before Parliament, Property Rites of Spouses Bill and Intestate Succession Bill, aim to ensure that men and women who may have acquired pr operty in the course of their relationship would have such properties divided at the dissolution of the union.

Gbenga Daniel protests confiscation of hotel by Ogun govt

FORMER Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel yesterday opposed the confiscation of his yet-to-be completed multi-billion naira hotel in Abeokuta by the state government, describing the action as illegal.Following the acceptance of recommendations of a Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led administration to look into some petitions, the government, through a "White Paper" confiscated the hotel in "public interest."

Daniel through his Media Assistant stated: "We are constrained to once again draw the attention of members of the public in Ogun State and well-meaning Nigerians to another act of direct assault on the rule of law by the Amosun-led Ogun State Government."

James Iroha a.k.a Gringory

Veteran actor James Iroha is dead at 69. Mr Iroha was the creator of the hit tv sitcom The Masquarade, in which he also starred as Gringory Akabogu. Before his death, Gringory was reported to be suffering from an eye ailment

I grew up enjoying The Masquarade which also include characters like Chief Zebrudaya, Jegede Shokoya, Naty and Akpeno. May his soul rest in peace.
